Fall 2013 Trends

Fall is my dream season. I feel like it is the season that screams “fashion”. You get to layer up your pieces, wear cute wedges, fashionable over-the-knee boots, beanies, scarfs.. and the list goes on.

Below are a few of the trends for this season and an image to show you what it’s all about. Remember, these are trends – so if you do not like all of them, that’s fine, stick with what you know and get a few trend pieces for your wardrobe, whether it be a beanie, a scarf, or a beautiful coat.

Hats

Image

If this fall favorite is not your style, or too out there for you, stick to the winter beanie, it will keep you warm on the cool fall nights and is a great style piece.

Image

Leopard

Image

Leopard is a great fall print. You can wear the print in your scarf, your flats, your blouse or even your cardigan. It is a great neutral print that can be paired with just about anything.

Image

Emerald Green

Image

This is the emerald green that we are going for. This printed sweater is great, but if you can find a beautiful emerald green jacket definitely pick one up! This picture also showcases two other trends, leather and print. If this color is too bold for you to wear on your body, why not try your nails?

Layering

Image

These two images show you layering for both women and men. Remember, if your outfit does not need layering, do not add it just to make it a trend. You do not want to be smothering yourself in clothing, try and pick softer items to layer with.

Leather

Image

Leather, leather, leather. Whether you have this trend in your boots, your handbag, your jacket or in your pants, it is a classic look that is huge this season. A classic pair of leather pants with a black blouse should be a staple outfit. Or you can dress it down with some layers on top.

Image

If you are tired of the same old black leather leggings, why not try a colored pair? Bordeaux color looks stunning in leather.

Image

Over the knee boots

Image

Over the knee boots are great for those days when you want to remain casual, and just throw on a pair of leggings and layer up your top half. Or you can get a dressier over the knee boot with a heel to dress up your outfit.

Image

Slouchy Pants

Image

I am obsessed with the peg style trousers this season. ASOS has a few of them (picture below). There is also a high wasted version of the peg trouser that would look super cute with a crop top and a blazer, paired with a pair of booties. Have fun with this style.

Fur

Image

If you are not in to the full fur jackets, that is totally fine, not a lot of people are. I mean there are only so many places you can go to with a fur jacket on! Try finding a coat that has fur trim, that adds some character to your outfit. If you don’t want it on your jacket, why not a cute fall fur vest that you can layer with?

Hope you enjoyed these trends… Now how will you incorporate them into your wardrobe?

The Work Edit, by BCBG

During my daily web search this morning I found myself checking out the latest styles from BCBG. Sometimes when I am looking at designers websites I always wonder why they don’t have different outfit ideas. For example.. looks for the office, dinner, vacation and weddings. I was pleasantly pleased to see that BCBG had different outfit ideas for MANY sections.

Being a recent graduate myself, I’m always looking for the idea looks for the office and this page gives you a lot of different options. Of course all of the outfit ideas may not be appropriate for your job, but it doesn’t hurt to get different inspirations.

Bachelorette Wardrobe

Bachelorette Wardrobe

Bachelorette party outfits don’t have to just consist of boas and tiars, they can be chic.

During the day before you girls head out on the town you can wear cute tank tops that have “bride”, “maid of honor” and “bridesmaid” written on them.

At night the bride can dress in white and have her girls dress in black. If you wanted to add something to it like a tiara, veil, or a boa go for it, it is completely up to you. It all comes down to what type of bride you are and where you are going. If you are going with the black and white outfits you can even have little bins that they sell at Party City that say the title of the girls and you can get the flashy, glow in the dark bride one!

Have fun with it, but remember, you can still remain chic while doing it!

Perfect Wedding Dress for Your Body Type

Your boyfriend proposed and now you are engaged! With the hectic schedules of booking venues, florists, invitations, etc, you might be overwhelmed with the different options of a wedding dress. Working at Paloma Blanca in Toronto I saw many different dresses and was even able to try on a few. There are many different styles and even different shapes – there is a shape out there for you. Before you go out looking for a dress, take a look at your body and figure out your shape. Are you shaped like an hourglass, a pear, a rectangle, a triangle, an inverted triangle, a circle or are you lean, almost pencil shaped.

Before I give you the different dresses for each shape, I will give you a description for each shape before so that you know which dresses are for your own personal shape.

Hourglass

Image

  • bust and hips are well balanced
  • defined waist
  • your shoulders align nicely with your hips

Women that have an hourglass figure want to show it off. You can do this with a mermaid dress that is a fit and flare.

Image

A sheath dress that shows off your figure with a streamline silhouette.

Image

Or a ball gown that has a structured bodice.

Image

Standard

Image

  • have shoulders and hips that are the same width
  • body similar to hourglass, but not as defined
  • average body type
  • tend to gain weight evenly all over your body

These brides can wear whatever they want, because they have the body to pull off anything. This bride should show off her figure and show off her body with a dress that hugs her but also is stylish. A mermaid or trumpet would be my top two picks for this bride.

Image

Image

Triangle (Pear)

Image

  • hips are larger than your bust
  • defined waist

A triangle shaped bride wants to either wear an A-line gown, an empire gown or a ball gown. The idea here is to have the bottom of the dress angel away from your hips, showcasing your tiny waist.

This is the a-line option that has a fitted bodice and an angled skirt.

Image

The empire gown is a high-wasted style and draws the eye to the waist opposed to your hips.

Image

The ball gown is always a good option when hiding your lower half, just keep the bodice at the natural waist, we do not want a dropped waist here.

Image

V (Inverted Triangle)

Image

  • larger upper body and belly
  • broad shoulders, and ample bust and a wide back
  • Slim hips and flat bottom
  • Shapely legs

The inverted triangle bride will be seen in a mermaid gown, a ball gown or a short gown. The idea here is to create symmetry with the broad shoulders. You want to take the attention off of the shoulders and bring it down the waist or legs.

The mermaid gown with a flared skirt will bring attention to the legs and not the shoulders. If you are not comfortable showing your shoulder at all you can either put on a bolero or have a dress with straps.

Image

A ball gown has a fuller bottom, so this can switch the emphasize from your shoulders to your legs, especially if you have a lot of detail on the bottom of your dress.

Image

A short gown can have the same effect as the other two dresses because it draws attention to your legs and to your shoes. This is only for the bride that wants a short dress though.

Image

Rectangle

Image

  • have shoulders and hips that are equal width
  • no definition in your waist
  • athletic looking figure
  • no curves

The rectangle shaped bride can be seen wearing an a-line, sheath, or empire gown. The idea for these dresses is to CREATE shape that is not initially there.

The a-line gown can create an hourglass shape on the rectangle figure. The bodice and ribbon creates a slimming look for the bride and the a-line skirt creates the illusion that the bride has shape even if she doesn’t. There are different textures in the skirt as well which able it to create that feel of the hourglass.

Image

With the sheath dress you want it to hug your body, but be pulled in fitted to your body, so that it has the allusion of curves.

Image

The empire gown creates a waistline and it allows the dress to be flowy so that it does not hug the body.

Image

Circle (Apple)

Image

  • tend to have really narrow wrists and ankles
  • arms and legs may be your favorite feature
  • tend to gain weight in your middle section
  • the narrowest part of your torso tends to be right below your breast

If this brides main concern is her middle area a dropped waist gown would not be the best option. A fitted bodice with corset back will also create a proportioned silhouette. The best options would be an empire or a ball gown.

This empire dress will create an elongating silhouette with high waistlines and the skirt flows away from the body.

Image

The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a fuller skirt that creates the illusion of a smaller torso.

Image

Although these are the main body shapes, there are also other considerations when looking for a dress. If you are tall, short, plus size, skinny, busty. There is a lot to take in, in order to find the perfect dress.

A lot of brides think that if they are busty then they shouldn’t be wearing strapless, however, the strapless gown is normally the best option for the bustier bride.

For the shorter bride, a ballgown is not the best option, you do not want to get lost in the dress. A trumpet or a mermaid dress really shows off the shape and does not overwhelm the shorter bride with all the material.

Your bridal consultant will be able to show you styles that she thinks will look good on you, but it is always best to go in with a general idea of what you want and what you think will look good on you!

Happy shopping!

It’s Festival Season!

In Toronto this weekend is the first house summer festival of the year, Digital Dreams, with that festival follows VELD. Toronto got its first experience of festivals last year and it was an instant hit. Toronto house music fans got to experience what the United States and Europe has been experiencing for a while.

There are not only festivals in Toronto, there is Electric Zoo in New York City Labor Day Long Weekend, Electric Daisy in London in July and Tomorrowland in Belgium in July as well, just to name a few. The question with each festival is, “What do I wear”. You don’t want to be overdressed and you definitely want to feel comfortable, but not look comfortable. These outdoor festivals are normally running for 8 hours a day and run over the course of a weekend. You have to be able to endure any weather, heat, rain or cold.

Here are your inspirations for today:

– Chic Festival Girl- With a crop top and a pair of shorts, you are ready for any festival. The chic girl has a simple head band and killer shoes. These sandals will be comfortable and they are sturdy enough for the entire day.

Crop Top- $13.00 Jane Norman
Shorts- $47 Etsy
Sandals- $115 Aldo
Purse- $135 Loris Shoes

Image

Flower Child- A lot of flower childs at festivals go all out in tu-tu’s and bandeau’s, however, if that is not your style, show your flower child side with a killer daisy headband. These are very easy to find now and a lot of sellers on Etsy make them per your request. Wear a pair of wrap around sandals and your outfit is set.

Fringe Shirt- $40 Lord and Taylor
Shorts- $41 Monki
Sandals- $175 Avenue 32
Purse- $24 Target

Image

– Mr. GQ – when it comes to the guys, they can pretty much throw on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Here he is wearing a NY Yankees hat, a classic white tshirt and a pair of white shorts.

Shoes- $97 Converse Chuck Taylor
Hat- $40 New Era Men’s MLB
Shorts- $39 Topman
Sunglasses- $255 Prada

Image

– The Hipster- Still the same idea with the first outfit, just changing it up a bit, this has more of a hipster or street vibe to it.
Top- $21 Hot Topic
Shoes- $52 Converse Chuck Taylor
Sunglasses- $125 Gibson Sun
Vest- $87 Standard Jean Co.

I hope these outfits will give both ladies and gentlemen outfit ideas for your summer festivals!

What to Wear on a Rainy Day

Rain is something that Toronto has seen throughout the Spring Season and now it is coming into the Summer Season as well. For the remaining of the week it is supposed to be raining off and on in the city of Toronto and the surrounding areas. Other major cities like Chicago and New York are also seeing rain this week. Chicago is seeing rain at the beginning of the week, whereas New York is supposed to see rain towards the middle of the week.

Just because there is a little rain or a little thunder, doesn’t mean that we still can’t dress fashionable or chic.

Image

This outfit is an outfit that you could wear on a humid rainy day, like today.

With rain typically comes heat, so sometimes wearing a rain coat on these types of days is just too much. So instead throw on a romper with a cute pair of rain boots and keep a jean jacket with you just in case the day cools down. Always have an umbrella with you if you plan on going outside at all, or even if you are walking from your car to your office. Try and get an umbrella with a subtle or statement pattern!

You can still do heels in the rain, just be careful and make sure they do not have a slippery bottom underneath, because the last thing you want to do is slip. Make sure your shoes have ridges at the bottom of them and if they don’t you can purchase “Grips” which are stick on adhesives and are sold at many shoe stores, including ALDO Shoes. You can either wear it with a dress and a blazer or you can wear it with your black dress pants and a shirt. The only thing I recommend is NOT to wear wide leg trousers that end at the back of your heel, only because you do not want them to get wet as your walking. So stick to more of a skinny leg pant that will not get wet when walking outside in the rain. See outfit below.

Enjoy your rainy days!

From Recent Graduate to Working Woman

I know it is really hard making the transition from university student to working woman and a lot of the stress of the recent grads comes from not knowing what to wear to an interview. First impressions are everything and you want to walk into that interview showing you mean business and most importantly, showing that you are serious about the position you are applying for.

Ultimately, your outfit depends on the job you are applying for. Of course there are generalized outfits that will work for anyone, but it’s best to look into the company and their culture so that you get an idea of the atmosphere at the office.Or even better, if you know anybody that works for the company, ask them what the dress code is, you do not want to look under-dressed or over-dressed, you want to look professional, yet put together, yet chic.

This is an outfit similar to the outfit worn by the beautiful Victoria Beckham and this would be considered the generalized interview get-up.This outfit is seen as the ideal outfit for any type of interview really. It is simple and classic, yet fashionable at the same time. This outfit will always be a safe outfit no matter what the position is.

ImageImage

A classic black skinny dress pant, paired with a tucked in button down white blouse. It is always best to wear heals, opposed to flats, just because it seems more professional, and remember, this is your first impression, to a maybe-future manager or co-worker. Ladies, we are not running a marathon to get to this interview – if you have to walk a few minutes pack a pair of flats in your purse and before you turn the corner to your future office building, change those flats and put on your heels. Simply put your flats in your purse and nobody will ever know, it will be our little secret. And- with the heels, DO not go crazy with color ladies, keep it simple, keep it classic. A simple pair of black heels is perfect, it is understated yet classic. With regards to heel height, wearing 6-inch heels to an interview is maybe not the best idea, you do not want to look like you are going to a bar after your interview – remember simplicity is key.

The next outfit is business casual, with a pant and a skirt option. This outfit below would be a business-casual, sort of in the middle-ground of all outfits, and very similar to the generalized outfit that I posted first. The only difference is the shirt- peplum has a fashionable look and looks great with a pair of skinny trousers. This outfit would be great for any type of PR firm, publishing company, or media company.

Image

If you feel as though this outfit isn’t dressy enough, just change it up with a black skirt, but make sure that it is not short and does not have any slits.

Image

Lastly, is the casual outfit..

If you have an interview at a small boutique firm, they will tend to have a casual dress code. You still do not want to look too casual, but throw a blazer on top of your outfit to dress it down a bit. Finally, change your pumps to wedges, for a more casual, but still professional look.

Image

Good luck at any future interviews recent graduates! Of course, once you start working you will know exactly what to wear to work everyday! Here’s an inspiration for when that day comes.

Image

Above outfit is for the summer days. Sleek white trousers, paired with a white fitted blazer with a beige chiffon shirt underneath. Pair this outfit with beige/cognac shoes, with a purse or clutch to match and you have yourself a perfect summer office outfit.

Image

Lastly, is a little color pop in the skirt, but still a simple outfit!

Hope you guys enjoyed this!

All of the outfits were made by me on Polyvore.
